BunMa and Pyi Mai

Chaba was born on May 17, 2021 at around 9pm at an elephant show and riding camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

When our team learned about the plight of Chaba and her mother BunMa, we went to the camp to see if we could help them. We found the mother and baby in a small barren concrete pen, with the mother on a short chain.

It was immediately clear that they were both in poor health and needed urgent intervention. Our founder was able to negotiate their release to Elephant Nature Park, and on Wednesday August 11, 2021, our team went to rescue the mother and baby. It was originally planned to transport them by truck to ENP, but unfortunately they were both very apprehensive about getting onto the truck, so we decided it was safer for them to walk to our sanctuary. After 2 hours of walking they arrived at ENP and were welcomed with an elephant cake.

Chaba will now live freely at the park, surrounded by the love and care of her mother along with our whole team. Every day her personality emerges more strongly as she explores her new world.
