The Impressive Sight of Chana’s Herd

Chana’s herd huddles for a brief, yet vocal meeting before crossing the river. They head upstream, stopping at a muddy embankment where the young ones enter the river’s edge and play for a while, dunking their bodies.

The herd then begins the river crossing ever so gracefully under the gaze of the blazing sun. It is a wonderful sight to witness elephants living so happily among their own kind and flourishing in nature.

Chana engages the interest of her sister and nanny, SaiThong and Ploythong

Chana is a bright light, a playful soul, and open to the world ! She is the beating heart of this family group, now of 6 elephants. Kabu has been nursemaid to the younger members, MuayLek and ChomPu, while the others go on about their day. SaiThong and PloyThong think that they need to protect and safeguard their younger ward by following her every movement.

Tell me which you deem preferable, and then I will know the future of captive elephants. Is it a life lived in fear, under a hook with fear of pain, to instill behaviors that are ignoble and unnatural ? Is this what the tourist wants ? It is time to take responsibility for our actions as a tourist, and generally, as a species. Educate ourselves in the conditions prevalent for our enjoyment ! Are we entertained by suffering ?!

Elephant of the Week 17 July 2023: Kabu

Kabu had a horrible life by the time that we rescued her at 28 years old. As a youngster born to a logging mother, she would follow her mother into the mountain where she worked so that she could nurse. It's a dangerous environment and a labor rife with abuse.

A logged rolled and dislocated the ankle of a 2 year old girl. It took her a long and painful time to recover, and in the meanwhile dislocating her shoulder learning to walk again. As she grew up, eventually she was trained harshly to follow in the footsteps of her mother. She became a logging elephant, despite her physical infirmity.

Just the day after the traumatised young elephant arrived at Elephant Nature Park, MuayLek is being shown how to relax in the sanctuary of the park, meeting more of the herd, visiting the river, chatting with new friends and being showered with care and affection.

Chana, the youngest member of this family, is incredibly clever. She has a keen sense for the routines at Elephant Nature Park and instinctively predicts when the caretaker intends to take them to the river. Instead of waiting for her mahout's call, she takes matters into her own hands. Chana opens the gate to their lunchtime feeding area by herself and leads her friends to the bathing area after they have finished lunch.
