Trunk Up Tuesday 5 Jan 2016 – Baanyen

The first Trunk Up Tuesday of 2016!

60 year old Baanyen was rescued by Save Elephant Foundation 19 November 2014.

As she reaches her 2nd anniversary with us at Elephant Nature Park, we look at her transformation from the thin, unhealthy, lethargic elephant to the now energetic Baanyen we have today.

With best friend Jaem Sai always by her side, Baanyen has never looked better and happier than she is today.

Tomorrow we will no longer hear Grandma BaanYen’s voice. She has left us this afternoon. She stopped eating more than two weeks ago and our veterinary team continued to provide care and support for BaanYen’s condition.

Our founder Saengduean Lek Chailert consistently find time to visit the park in her busy schedule and always enjoys walking across the open grassland to meet with the herd. Lek is highly thought of by all the elephants at Elephant Nature Park and they express their affection at every opportunity.

Baanyen is not feeling well

Baan Yen, the eldest elephant at Pamper the Pachyderm project is not feeling well. As with so many of old age elephant, one of our largest concerns which can prove fatal, is the digestive system and a blockage. Most old elephant who do not have much in the way of teeth left will have a problem with digestion sooner or later. Complications arise and there are only so many options.

Meet Baanyen – Four O’Clock Flower

Baan Yen was born around 1950. Her name means ‘Four O’Clock Flower’. She started her working life as a logging elephant and was finally rescued after two decades giving rides to tourists in a trekking camp. Baan Yen arrived at ENP in January 2014. She was thin and had many abscesses. With good care, it did not take her long to recover and gain weight and energy. After a few months she met another newly rescued elephant named Jaem Sai who has since became her best friend.
