Location: Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand
Nearest Airport: Chiang Mai (CNX)
Duration: Full Day
For more than 20 years, Karen tribes have rented their elephants to Elephant Camps because they could no longer legally use the Elephants for logging work. The Karen people have traditionally worked with Elephants but now the tradition is fading.
After seeing other Elephant owners change their way of caring for their Elephants, a group of Elephant owners in Mae Wang area, just south of Chiang Mai city, have agreed to stop renting their Elephants to the trekking industry and have committed to care for the Elephants at their homes with the support of Save Elephant Foundation and forget the trekking chairs.
We are now pleased to add another Elephant experience to our portfolio called Karen Elephant Experience which allows more Elephants to roam free in their natural habitat without riding.
Schedule of the day
8:00am - 8:30am pick up from your Chiang Mai city hotel or you must be at our office at 7:40am (see map) and transported to the project. This involves a transfer to a 4x4 truck for a 30 minute off road drive to the village.
After a safety briefing on arrival at the project, you will meet the elephant herd and hear stories of their lives. You will then have the opportunity to feed the elephants.
After lunch, you will change into provided Karen style clothing, walk with the elephants following them as they roam and forage in the forest to find their food. The walk will include a visit to their favourite mud pit and then onwards to the river to watch them bathe.
Enjoy a walk back to the village, leaving the elephant in their family group to enjoy their freedom in the forest.
4:00pm - After a shower and changing into your clean clothes, handing back the traditional Karen clothing, you will depart the village and return to Chiang Mai arriving at about 6:00pm.
