Lanna and Sao Yai Enjoy Wandering in the Forest

Mar 5, 2026

Mae Lanna and Sao Yai wander side by side through the forested hills, moving at their own unhurried pace. Years ago, this land behind Elephant Nature Park was leased from the local community and carefully restored into a flourishing natural forest where these elephants can roam and forage.

For elephants, who must consume roughly 5–10% of their body weight each day, the forest offers an abundant buffet of native plants, grasses, and trees. Banana leaves are among their favourites, and the pair instinctively navigate the forest, browsing and foraging along the way. Seeing them so at home in the forest reminds us how vital these natural spaces are for elephants and other wildlife, and how important it is to protect and conserve forests for generations to come.

Though Lanna is blind in both eyes, she walks along the forest trails with a sense of ease—because she is never alone. Sao Yai, her devoted and constant companion, acts as Lanna’s eyes, protecting and guiding her every step. Sao Yai walks ahead, then pauses to wait, softly calling so Lanna knows exactly where she is. Her care is unconditional, a quiet expression of deep trust and love.

Each day, we are blessed to witness this beautiful bond. Lanna and Sao Yai show us that friendship can overcome any limitation, and that love—patient and protective—can light even the darkest path.
