A Tragedy at the Park

Dear Friends and Supporters:

We are distressed and deeply saddened to report to you a tragedy which happened at our park yesterday, midday March 11th. A number of Mahouts nearby MeeSook’s enclosure heard strange noises coming from her shelter where she remains under medical care and observation since her rescue. The mahouts found a man lying inside and MeeSook standing over him. They quickly pulled the man out. Staff loaded him immediately and took him to the closest hospital.
Later in the day we learned of some friends who knew him and they told us that this man’s name was San Tor Ni, age 20 years old, who came to visit his brother who works in the trekking camp nearby us. He also came looking for work. He came to someone who works at our park, asking them to help him obtain work at the park. Our staff said he would try. Earlier in the day, Pom, our manager, told our staff that we cannot have him as we have no position open and he also had no work permit .
During the lunch time mahouts who stood with their elephant nearby MeeSook’s shelter heard something wrong inside her enclosure and they ran to see what happened, found the young man and helping him out, rushed him immediately to the closest hospital . Tragically, he was badly injured and he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital with our great sadness.
Mee Sook was rescued from Krabi province in the south of Thailand from an elephant riding camp. Her condition was one of depression and aggression from abuse and overwork. She was lame and with distinct mental issues. Mee Sook is still on a program of rehab and therapy. Our staff work every day with her to help her accept our love and care. She remains in her quarantine area for staff and guest safety. She also receives positive reinforcement training to assist working with her. She goes out to the river and mud bath at the end of every day. We hope that one day our treatment can help her to be calm and to forget her terrible history. Today, after the tragedy, despite earlier progress, we can see again her depression and stress. We will do everything possible to assist our old elephant to heal and to return to a normal life again, but it will take time.
For the young man and his family, we will look after them as much as we can and help bring them to a better place than the sorrow felt this day.
