The Life-Giving Power of Water May 18, 2026 For elephants, water is far more than a simple drink. It is a lifeline that supports their health, comfort, and happiness every single day. An adult elephant can drink 150 to 200 liters of water daily, but water plays an even greater role than hydration alone. Bathing and swimming are essential parts of an elephant’s natural routine. When elephants have the opportunity to bathe regularly, their skin stays hydrated, healthy, and smooth rather than dry and cracked. Despite its thickness, elephant skin is sensitive and can easily develop problems when proper care is lacking. Without regular bathing, parasites such as ticks and elephant lice can cling to the body and feed for long periods. Fungal infections and bacterial skin diseases may also develop, sometimes hidden beneath the skin before becoming chronic wounds. Many of our rescued elephants arrived with long-standing skin infections that required extensive treatment and care. Water also provides powerful therapy. Swimming and bathing help elephants stay cool in hot climates, while the buoyancy of water offers gentle, low-impact exercise for their joints. Elephants are natural swimmers and can hold their breath underwater for up to two minutes. When their trunks remain above the surface, acting as natural snorkels, they can glide through the water with surprising ease. Perhaps most importantly, water brings comfort and joy. Watching elephants relax in a river or pool reveals a sense of peace that is unmistakable. Back to News Share it
