I don't know how to describe my time here at Elephant Conservation
Park, all I know is that as a result of the visit I changed my
flight plans out of Thailand so that I could stay at the park as a
volunteer for a week longer and that I can't wait to come back. The
Park is run by people who truly take care of their elephants and
care about the future of all elephants in Thailand. I will give a
short description of one event as a volunteer.
Our visit to Elephant Heaven started off by a wash of the
elephants in the river and it was followed by a trek through the
river and to the top of a mountain in the middle of the jungle. I
rode on Thai, she was very eager to get to the top and was the
second one to reach Heaven. At the
top the elephants can roam where ever they like and indulge in
variety of their favorite foods. In the morning, after the elephants
have had their fill, it is the volunteer's job to find their
elephant. My mahoot and I were lucky and found ours under a fruit
tree which looked like wild apples. Thai was with her girlfriend
Siam and their bellies looked nice and round. It seems while all the
volunteers were sampling some delicious Thai cuisine, the elephants
were busy getting their fill of the greens. In the morning both the
elephants and the people came down to earth happy to have gotten a
taste of Heaven. |
