Elephant of the Week 4 September 2023: Jaidee

Elephant of the Week 4 September 2023: Jaidee

Jaidee made it through all her years of service without any broken bones or dislocations but is blind in one eye and has minimal sight in the other. Jaidee is now ~76 years old. She can still move pretty fast for an old lady, which we have to be cautious of because she does not make friends readily. Her eye issues keep her mostly out of the sun and she goes for walks when the sun is setting.

With a name that means ‘good heart,’ Jaidee lives up to it. She has a very sweet manner about her, regardless of her long and torturous past. She arrived to Elephant Nature Park in January of 2015 and enjoys her days in the jungle, away from the crowds. Thank you to Mr.Adam Flinn, Elephant Nature Park Co-founder for donating funds in memory of his late Mother and enabling the rescue of Jaidee and a new life to live in her forever home at Elephant Nature Park.

JaiDee is mean “Good Heart “, she has been rescued and arrived ENP on 25th January 2015.  After 4 months staying at the park, she still keep walking around the park to learn and choosing the herd for herself. She still hesitate and can not make a decision which group to join in. While she is walking to visit each group, TongJan come to greet her and try to convince JaiDee to join her group.

Jaidee is a 68 year old female elephant, rescued from Koh Phanga. She had been owned by a resort that has now closed down their elephant camp, as a result of the new Animal Protection Law, enacted in December 2014. She used to work in illegal logging industry and trekking camp for most of her life. Jaidee was brought to Elephant Nature Park on 25th January 2015, she was thin and exhausted but lucky to have no broken bones. Thanks to funds donated by Adam Flinn in honor of his mother Mrs.Katherine Flinn, Jaidee could have a chance to live the rest of her life with freedom and joy in the sanctuary of Elephant Nature Park.

Jaidee is making the decision which herd will be her new family ?

As with every new rescued elephant arrival at Elephant Nature Park, days, weeks or even months are taken by the new arrival to observe their new home. They visit different herds and later they will make a decision which herd they want to join, if herd members are willing. Jaidee did the same. Since she arrived at our park less than a month ago, she has become so confident to walk and introduce herself to different family groups, especially the group that have young elephants.

Newly rescued elephant Jaidee is walking to introduce herself to another family, this time it isFaa Mai’s herd. They greet each other by using their trunks touch her face and all over her body. It’s looks like they are excited to welcome a new member to the herd. We are still keeping an eye on Jaidee’s behavior and the reaction with other elephants to make sure that she is getting along with our herd and settling into her new life of happiness in the sanctuary of Elephant Nature Park.
