Another Elephant Birth
By Adam Flinn

04 August 1999

It seems that the inhabitants at Elephant Nature Park don't quite realise how hard it is to breed in captivity. The second birth since January saw the herd's latest edition raise her trunk to celebrate her arrival.

The park's founder, Ms Sangdeun Chailert was there to witness the birth and make sure everything went smoothly.

The nine year old mother, young for an elephant, gave birth at 10:00 PM on Wednesday 04th August without complications and the elephant appeared to be in fine fettle.

Her first steps, as is normal with young elephants, were halting so she stayed close to her mother. The female calf has yet to receive a name. This will be left to the keeper of the mother and is likely to be named in the next few days.

"This is one of the beauties of nature" exclaimed Sangduen "I hope she grows up strong and healthy "

The calf will stay with her mother for at least four years during which time she will be taught to transform the limp trunk into one of the most versatile limbs of any creature.

This birth brings the total of new born to six in the park's four year history.
