Elephant Nature Park Host Fish Conservation Event
On Saturday January 23rd, 2009 Elephant Nature Park
hosted a fish conservation event. Lek has been trying to reduce
over-fishing by educating people in local villages about how
decrease their environmental impact. Children were brought to
the park to learn about ways to limit over-fishing. Monks also
came from a nearby temple to bless the fish with Elephant Nature
Park volunteers and show the importance of fish conservation.
Mae Taeng River that flows right though Elephant Nature Parkand provides
a habitat for many creatures, including several species of fish.
The fish are a source of food for the animals that live along
the riverbanks but also to the people that live nearby. With so
many relying on the fish for sustenance, it is important that
measures are taken to protect the fish population.
During this time of year, the fish are breeding, so in order to
ensure healthy populations in years to come, Lek and Elephant
Nature Park have asked that people limit their fishing as much
as possible until breeding season has finished. Lek has also
made the kilometer stretch of river touching Elephant Nature
Park’s property a ‘no fishing zone’ so that the fish can have a
space to grow and ultimately replenish the population.
With
a proper understanding of the fish’s life cycle and
conservation, the future will be far more secure for the fish
and all of those that depend on them.
