We are most grateful for the staff and students of Greengates School, north-western Mexico. These energetic youngsters put so much time and effort into their activities. They certainly looked as if they had a lot of fun as well. They raised an incredible US$ 507 (17,279.52 Baht) which will be used for medicine and treatment of elephants at our park and beyond. Kate Evans, Greengates School co-ordinator explains;
"After reading Akimbo and the Elephants (a story based in Africa)
the children in my class were shocked by the ivory trade and wanted
to do something to help elephants in the world. Having visited The
Elephant Nature Park in the summer of 2007 I knew how special the
park is and the work that you do with the elephants at the park and
in the villages in Thailand.
The children then came up with games and activities that would appeal to younger and older children, including, pin the tail on the elephant; guess who is in the elephant costume; make an elephant mask; telling stories with elephant characters; memory game involving pictures of elephants; name the elephant toy; as well as selling cake and drinks. The children then had to organise themselves into working groups and design and make their activities, including posters etc. During the weeks before the event the children sold tickets for their activities and spoke to different classes about what was going to happen in the day and how they would be helping the elephants at the park. The children also made posters about the elephants at your park, each choosing a different elephant. They grew to love the elephants and were very sad when we read that Max died, but over-joyed when a baby was born.
The children had a fantastic time organising this event and we hope
that the money we raised will feed the herd for a while or provide
medicines to help look after the sick animals."
