Friday 12 Sep 08 -  A group of lucky volunteers joined Pom, Chom and Dr. Prasit on our jumbo express programme. The traveled hoping to rescue a young elephant named Tong Daeng who had been injured 18 months earlier. He fell from a 50 gallon drum during a tourist elephant show. The fall had broken his left front leg and he sustained shoulder and elbow damage. The break had healed badly and his leg is deformed. He has a slight limp and, when tired, he drags his foot along the ground. He has stayed at his owners village since that time.

Underweight and frail, he look s as if he is around 4 years old but his owners say he is 6. He is very small compared to our young, healthy robust elephants. Aura and Tong Jaan, both 3.5 years  old are almost as big as him

Our team endured a a tiring 7 hour truck journey to bring him to the park. He was able to get down from the truck without much trouble and was immediately offered a big pile of bananas. He gobbled them up with relish. He didn't seem too distressed by all of the strangers around him or even the dogs and seemed fairly calm. after having his fill of bananas. Tong Daeng was taken down to the river to see if he wanted to have a drink or actually get in to cool down a bit. he tentatively stuck his trunk in to the cool water, but that was about it. no splashing or playing.

One very exciting aspect of the youngsters arrival was that his mother was at the park waiting. She is named Mae Tong Dee, who arrived for maternity leave at the end of May with her newest baby, Tong Tae. It was decided that it would probably be ok to put Tong Daeng with his mom and little brother and the lucky auntie who slept with them, Mae Boon Ma. We weren't sure how mum would react when she saw her older calf, but, after some curious sniffs, all of them settled in well together. The two brothers took a little time to get to know each other as the bedded down for the night.

The following morning, Tong Daeng and family were taken out to an area of the park where they would be undisturbed. It was such a beautiful sight to see how well he was accepted by his mother and how well he fitted in to the family. Another of Tong Tae's aunties was there to join them, Sri Nuan, who also took Tong Daeng's arrival in well, and part time auntie Dok Ngern joined them on this morning as well. She really seemed to take to this young gentle boy. Young tusker Tong Suk came to inspect the new arrival and introduce himself,

So, this newcomer , who had such bad luck in the past, had finally hit a winning streak as he had found a new home at the park. Tong Daeng has settled right in to a family group and is enjoying the nurturing and stability of his mother and a collection of various aunties. He is bonding with his little brother in this is healing environment. Every day will be a new adventure for him as he gradually meets the rest of the herd, gains confidence and becomes healthy with good food and exercise. Hopefully his days of exploitation have come to an end and he will never have to leave the safety and sanctity of Elephant Nature Park
