Orphans enjoy time at the park

Ging Geao Orphanage on Wualai Road, Chiang Mai came to the park for a day visit early last month. Twenty five children, aged between 3 and 6 years old enjoyed their time with us and were very well behaved. They all seemed to enjoy feeding the elephants very much. They stayed for lunch and watched the elephants river bathing from the beach hut. They happily sang the 'chang chang chang' (elephant-elephant-elephant) song many times and with great enthusiasm. This was part of Elephant Nature Park's community outreach project where Lek invites local orphanages and school groups to visit the park for free. This is the park's way of exposing young Thai children to elephants in a positive manner. It offers them an alternative to typical elephant tourism camps and is more fun for the elephants and people.

The children of this country hold the future of the Thai elephant in their hands so, hopefully, their love for these gentle giants will help them to care and protect elephants in the future.

Mae Bua Kham and Mae Lanna's park anniversary

Mae Bua Kham and Mae Lanna celebrated their first full year anniversary of life at Elephant Nature Park.  Mae Bua Kham has really filled out physically and is in much better health. When she arrived all of her ribs could be counted and she was in a poor state. Now she looks and acts quite a lot younger than her advancing years. She really enjoys wrestling with both Hope and Tong Suk.

Mae Lanna still enjoys occosional friendship with Tong Suk but spends most of her time alone. She has adapted quite well to life at our park but is easily panicked which we attribute to her very limited sight. Both Mae Lanna and Mae Bua Kham have remained aloof and alone since arrival, but there is still hope that they will find sole mates in the future.
