15 August 2005 - by Lek Chailert
In the middle of all the sadness of loss and damage from the floods
Jobaan has brought a wonderful surprise to all of us at the park. Late
afternoon of the 15 August a mahout noticed Jobaan looking very agitated and nervous.
My experience in helping many mother elephant gave birth told me that Jobaan would calf very soon.
We rushed to prepare a place for her. Most of the park still soaking wet
and muddy so we put down sand and a dry mattress. Jobaan was very clam but we keep a
careful watch on her. At
11:30pm she started to stand up and assumed a position to deliver her calf.

At 11.54 pm under the clear moonlight of a beautiful silver night sky her baby was born and little body tumbled down to the earth.
It was a baby boy. Jobaan proudly announced the healthy birth by trumpeting and all the elephants response to her filling the rain soaked valley with their chorus.
Our newest member weighs 114 kilogram and is a healthy boy. Jobaans first reaction was to hug her baby with her trunk. She never wants
him to stray from her and is very protective. Her previous experiences of three lost babies
must weigh heavily on her mind.
