"Mae Kham Puan"
Blind Elephant arrives home to the Park
16 December 2010

Mae Kham Puan arrives at around 5 p.m. from a trekking camp not far from Elephant Nature Park. She is 90% blind as a result of human inflicted injuries. Most likely the weapon used was the dreaded slingshot . She spent most of her life as an illegal logging elephant but when her lack of sight affected her job performance she was moved to a trekking camp. Here the owner thought it would be no problem to work her- BUT- he wasn't taking into consideration the more observant tourists who immediately noticed Mae Kham Puan's milky sightless eyes and her lack of confidence, walking slowly using her trunk to feel her way along. The mahout walked along side of her and pulled her ear to get her moving. Trekkers felt bad about riding this elephant and complained so the owner decided to sell. Thankfully Elephant Nature Park serial guardian angel Bert Von Roemer happily donated the funds to rescue Mae Kham Puan. We hope that she will soon find friendship and enjoy her new found freedom.
