Liberty, wondering what these strange two-legged creatures were doing!

Liberty

"Born free!"

Born into our herd: 25 Jan 03
Rescued from: None needed

Born 25 Jan at 3 PM to a 16 year old mother named, Sao Yai, Meg Ryan was filmed with this elephant during a visit in 2000. The infant girls father is 20 years old and named Pooky. He has a handicap, a broken front leg. Both parents are ex-logging elephants.

Unlike most elephant calves born into captivity Liberty will be spared the gruesome training ritual practiced throughout the region.

Libby, as she is often called, is in good health and, as with all infants, is curious about the new things she comes in contact with.

Her name was chosen by site visitors who flooded us with thousands of suggestions, Liberty being the most common choice. We found it fitting and hope Liberty can be an example for the future of elephants in Asia.

She certainly has got off to a good start.
